Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's life is no longer in danger, after the assassination he faced days ago, Slovakia's Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak said on Sunday.
"He is no longer in danger for his life, but his condition continues to be serious and he should be in intensive care," said Kalinak, Fico's closest political ally.
The person accused of attempted assassination of the prime minister appeared before the court on Saturday.
The accused, identified by Slovak media as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, shot Fico with a gun after a government meeting on Wednesday.
Cintula fired five times against Fico, while he shot him four times - including hitting him in the abdomen - while the prime minister was near his supporters, after the government meeting held in the town of Handlova.
Fico was taken to hospital by helicopter and underwent a five-hour operation, as well as another two-hour operation on Friday.
Fico has been in power since his centrist populist party, Smer, won the general elections last fall./ REL
