Australia welcomed the New Year under tight security and surveillance.
Midnight has finally struck in Sydney, along with much of eastern Australia, where celebrations are in full swing as people celebrate 2026.
Fireworks have lit up the sky over Sydney Harbour as part of the iconic annual display.

The first major and internationally renowned fireworks display over the Harbour Bridge and Opera House took place under increased security measures and with moments of silence, commemorating the recent tragic events at Bondi Beach in December.
Despite difficult circumstances, Australians came together to welcome 2026 with hope and unity.
Announcements broadcast inside CBD train stations asked passengers to turn on their phone lights at 11pm to "light a light in solidarity with the victims and anyone affected by the terrorist attack in Bondi".
In Sydney, a moment of silence is being held for the victims of the Bondi Beach attack ahead of the city's 2026 fireworks display.
