In the framework of a three-day official visit to London, the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis did not hesitate in an interview for the BBC to refer to the issue of the return of the marble sculptures, once part of the Greek Parthenon, exhibited for almost a century in the British Museum.
"The sculptures are from Greece and have been stolen, it is a matter of reuniting them with the rest of the old reliefs and 2,500-year-old statues, which present scenes from Greek mythology," he declared.
"I think the answer is very clear. They are best seen in the Acropolis Museum, a modern purpose-built museum. And again, this is not a matter of returning artifacts whose ownership we question. We think that these sculptures belong to Greece and that they are essentially stolen," Mitsotakis said.
The British side continues to insist that the Parthenon sculpture collection became part of the British Museum legally after it was purchased by the former British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, who obtained legal permission for these pieces of marble, statues or carved pieces of the temple, it took you to London.
"If I told you that you would cut the Mona Lisa in half and you would have half in the Louvre and half in the British Museum. Do you think your viewers would appreciate the beauty of the painting in such a way? Well, that's exactly what happened with the Parthenon Sculptures, and that's why we continue to lobby for an agreement that would essentially be a partnership between Greece and the British Museum, but which would allow us to return the sculptures in Greece and people appreciated them now in their original environment."
Mitsotakis, who will have contacts and meetings with businessmen, homogenous Greeks, but also with Prime Minister Risi Sunak and opposition leader Kir Stamer, has referred in his interview to Greece's efforts to control illegal immigration, calling it the policy of Athens. harsh, but fair.
Asked about the great tragedy of the ship with more than 600 immigrants that drowned near the Greek coast last June, he emphasized that the event is being investigated by justice, while he mentioned the efforts of the Navy to save people's lives, as well as the cooperation with Turkey in dealing with human trafficking rings.
