Germany has arrested a Russian citizen who allegedly stabbed two Ukrainian soldiers to death.
German prosecutors said they do not rule out the possibility that the killing of two Ukrainian soldiers over the weekend may have been politically motivated.
The two soldiers, who were recuperating in southern Germany, were found outside a shopping center in a town in Bavaria on Saturday evening. According to the police, they had suffered serious stab wounds.
One of them, 36 years old, died at the scene, while the other soldier, 23 years old, died in the hospital as a result of his injuries.
A 57-year-old Russian national was arrested shortly after the alleged murders, German police said.
According to the first information, the three people seem to have known each other.
"The motive for the crime is still unclear, although the political motive cannot be ruled out. Investigators are investigating in all directions," said the Munich Prosecutor's Office, which is handling this case.
The Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dymtro Kuleba, has asked the Ukrainian Consulate General in Munich to monitor the case and continue to be in contact with the German authorities.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, two German-Russian citizens were arrested in Germany earlier in April on suspicion of planning sabotage attacks, including against military buildings. Officials said that these attacks were aimed at undermining military support for Ukraine./ REL
