The Florence Court of Appeal has ordered the preliminary detention of Maria Concetta Riina and her husband Antonino Ciavarello, respectively the daughter and son-in-law of the late Cosa Nostra boss, Totò Riina.
Both are being investigated for aggravated extortion using mafia methods and attempted extortion, crimes committed in collaboration against two Tuscan entrepreneurs.
According to the investigation, they are suspected of making repeated demands for money, accompanied by threats and intimidation, to the point of pushing at least one of the businessmen to hand over a sum of money. The arrest was announced today by Florence prosecutor Filippo Spiezia.
It is particularly noteworthy that, during the period under investigation, Ciavarello was already detained in prison, from where he would have managed to send messages to his wife and one of the injured parties using an unauthorized mobile phone.
According to the Court, the imprisonment of the two suspects would be necessary due to the risk of repetition and manipulation of evidence.
