Who are the two judges who gave their lives for justice and how are their lives connected to each other, from birth, childhood and devotion to death to bring peace to the country and eliminate the mafia.
On May 23, 1992, Judge Giovanni Falcone was murdered in broad daylight, a crime that marked a turning point in Sicilian history. Falcone and his wife, Francesca Morvillo, were killed along with three security guards after a bomb exploded in their car on a street near Capaci, in what has been dubbed the Capaci massacre.
Falcone, who was 53 when he died, spent most of his life fighting the Mafia. He presided over the largest ever trial in 1986-1987, which led to the conviction of 342 mobsters.
The trial lasted from 10 February 1986 to 30 January 1992 and was held in a purpose-built bunker-style court within the walls of Ucciardone prison. July 19, 57 days after Falcone's murder, magistrate Paolo Borsellino, engaged with Falcone in the fight against gangs, goes to visit his mother in Via Mariano D'Amelio, in Palermo.
At 4:58 in the afternoon another terrible explosion occurred: this time in the heart of the city.
The lives of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino are intertwined. Both were born in Palermo: Giovanni on May 20, 1939, Paolo 8 months later, on January 19.
Also both grew up in Kalsa, Palermo, an area of merchants and exponents of the bourgeois class. They lived a few tens of meters away from each other and were friends since childhood: they found themselves playing in Piazza della Magione.
In the life of little Giovanni there was school, Catholic action and a little fun. While for his strict father, travel and vacations did not exist. And his mother was also an 'energetic and authoritative woman.
On the other hand, in Borsellino's house, the atmosphere was more lively: there were often friends visiting and discussions about books and philosophy.
Giovanni and Paolo both attended the classical lyceum. After high school he entered the Military Academy of Livorno, then thought better of it and enrolled in law.
Borsellino, on the other hand, immediately decided to study law, but while he was attending university, his father died and his family's economic conditions deteriorated. Despite the difficulties, at the age of 22 he graduated with the maximum result.
Meanwhile, Paolo had started his career at the Enna civil court as a judicial auditor. In 1967 he had his first managerial position – praetor in Mazara del Vallo (Trapani) – and in December 1968 he married Agnese Piraino Leto, with whom he would have 3 children.
In 1969 he moved to Monreale, near Palermo, where he worked with Carabinieri captain Emanuele Basile, who was murdered by the Mafia in 1980.
