"My life is in danger in Albania", Laert Haxhiu seeks asylum in Greece

The file of the much-wanted Laert Haxhiu, arrested a few weeks ago in Ioannina, has been handed over to the Greek authorities.

Now the decision belongs to the court of Ioannina, to decide whether or not to allow his extradition.

Haxhiu has requested asylum with the argument that his life is in danger if he is extradited. The first hearing for the extradition of Laert Haxhi will be held on June 20.

At the end of May, the court of Ioannina gave Haxhiu 40 days in prison, pending extradition procedures to Albania, where he will face justice for the charges of murder and organized criminal group.

The 30-year-old, considered by the State Police as one of the 5 most wanted in the country since 2017, has been sentenced for attempted murder with 18 years of imprisonment for an incident recorded in 2016 and is on trial in the Court Special for the double murder in Lushnja in 2017, where Zamir Latifi and Jurgen Hoxha lost their lives, and Marjus Xhepexhiu was injured.
