Rama and the US: What is hidden behind the messages of American diplomacy?
Edi Rama seems to be having a bad time with the Americans. Although he tries to portray himself as a global leader and when speaking in foreign media he tries to praise President Trump, the facts are that Rama is not being ignored by the Americans at all. Not to mention that he has entered the red circle.
But what are the facts?
The main fact is that since Trump took the reins of the White House, there has been no meeting with Edi Rama from his administration. Rama himself has not been invited to the US and no senior official has come to Tirana to meet him. Although Babloku has lobbied hard to secure a meeting, he has not succeeded.
But this is not the only fact. The American Embassy in Tirana has been sending coded messages for several weeks, which show that Rama is not doing so well.
The first message came on May 27, where the US embassy reacted to the May 11 elections, congratulating the Albanian people and not Rama or the majority on the victory.
The following day, the US embassy distributed a statement by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau: " The United States can be a willing partner with considerable political capital. We can work hard; but we will work only with those who are committed to practical realism for their countries. We reject both unacceptable extremes of the desire for extraordinary transformation, on the one hand, or the revision of ancient grievances, on the other. Endless and expansive politics, without restraint and historical humility, becomes an enemy of strategy and constitutional statebuilding. This is not our purpose, our function, or our mission ."
The message was clear for Rama and Tirana's politics: the US no longer cooperates with individuals who hide behind a finger and work at the expense of citizens.
On July 18, the next message came. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a cable instructing embassies not to congratulate winning leaders in the elections. He also asked U.S. embassies to stop commenting on the legitimacy of elections in the countries where they operate. And it seemed clear that this message had something to do with the situation in Albania.
The other message was yesterday. The US Embassy shared a portion of the speech of the spokesperson Tammy Bruce, made on August 12 regarding the freedom of the press. The spokesperson had a long conference with journalists and the embassy only excerpted a passage from her speech: " We consider freedom of expression a fundamental component of a functioning democracy. Societies are strengthened by the free expression of opinions, and government censorship is intolerable in a free society. Freedom of expression remains under threat in many parts of the world, as highlighted in the 2024 Human Rights Report. Governments continue to use censorship, arbitrary or unlawful surveillance, and restrictive laws against voices they do not like, often on political or religious grounds. And, no matter how objectionable someone's speech may be, criminalizing or forcibly silencing it only serves as a catalyst for further hatred, oppression, and polarization ."
The message is very striking and relates to the situation in Albania. It comes at a time when Rama has surrounded News 24 with police.
So, it seems that every month there are messages. As much as Rama tries to use his connections with Jared Kushner to gain the trust of the Trump administration, so far nothing has come of it. The embassy is proving that they are not easily bought, a message that also goes to Berisha. /Pamphlet
