The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted sharply in Parliament to the decision to remove oil subsidies for farmers, describing it as a policy that directly hits the poorest sections of the country and encourages the depopulation of rural areas.
In his speech, Berisha accused the government of further increasing the economic burden on Albanian farmers at a time when fuel prices remain high. He stressed that Albania applies the highest fuel tax in the world and compared the price Albanian farmers pay with that of neighboring countries.
According to the democratic leader, the lack of support for agriculture is placing Albanian farmers in an unequal competitive environment and is harming domestic production. He considered the situation an “anti-Albanian policy” and harshly criticized the government for the way the rural sector is being treated.
"There is no more absurd act than what you are proposing today in Parliament. There is no more cynical act against the 30-40% of Albanians who live by the sweat of their brow. There is no more heartless attitude. Come here, after you have removed the oil subsidy for farmers at the height of the oil crisis.
There is no normal person in the world who can imagine such a decision, except for the one who was terrified by the earthquake, by this one, by the one who doesn't come to Parliament at all now, he is terrified and doesn't know what to do. What is this shame?! The poorest villagers in Europe. This is a policy of depopulation. It is an anti-Albanian policy. The Macedonian farmer gets oil for 100 lek, the citizen for 150 lek. How do you explain this?
"The chief thief of Albania, with the highest tax in the world on a liter of oil, forces Albanians to buy it for 2.2 euros. These are cynical acts. Do you know how much they charge Albanians with VAT on oil? Tens, tens of millions of euros," Berisha said, among other things.
