Former SP MP Petro Koçi has spoken openly about his stance on the action taken by Prime Minister Edi Rama to remove a number of local directors, who according to him have created a “Republic of Directors.” Koçi, who was the first to articulate this term more than a year ago, stated that he fully supports Rama’s intervention at the local levels.
"I support Mr. Rama's strong initiative. It's not because 'we wanted to make changes,' but because it has always been requested by him," said Koçi.
According to him, the long tenure of many directors has brought "moral infections", while local leaders have proven incapable of intervening, colluding with these directors.
"Their relations with this 'community of leaders' have been in the spirit of cooperation. A firm decision is needed, even if it means burning 'the wet with the dry'," he stressed.
Asked if this action is not overdue after 12 years in power, Koçi denied it, recalling that Rama has previously taken similar steps since his second term, but they were left half-way after the 2019 earthquake and during the pandemic.
He recalled an action in Gjirokastra that Rama held as party leader, not as prime minister, underlining that "there is more power in the party than in the government."
However, Koçi did not hesitate to praise Rama for his performance in foreign policy, describing it as unprecedented:
"In foreign policy, Rama has excelled. Albania is closer than ever to EU membership. And for this, the credit goes to Edi Rama, without a doubt," he concluded.
