German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated today that the US should not bypass the Europeans in negotiations with Russia over Ukraine, while emphasizing that any agreement requires European consent.
During his speech to the German parliament, he said that Europeans want to see an end to the war in Ukraine as soon as possible.
The German leader stressed that any agreement negotiated between "great powers" without the consent of Ukraine and without the consent of Europe will not ensure a lasting peace.
"At this unfortunate moment for Ukraine, for Europe and for our alliance with the US, I also want to make it clear: European issues can only be decided with the agreement of Europe ," Merz asserted.
"Europe is a sovereign actor that pursues its interests and values. And in all these developments, we must not forget: this war could end tomorrow if Russia stops the attacks and withdraws troops from foreign territory," he added.
The Conservative leader welcomed changes made to US President Donald Trump's initial 28-point plan following talks between US, Ukrainian and European delegations in Geneva on Sunday.
"Unity is now essential, unity in Europe, unity with Ukraine and unity in the transatlantic alliance," Merz declared, adding that Western countries should exert more pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and force the Kremlin to sit at the negotiating table.
