The details, how the Croatian Prime Minister was arrested and the example that SPAK should follow...
The Americans demand that SPAK follow the Croatian example in the fight against corruption. So far, the Special Prosecutor's Office has gone to Sali Berisha, Lefer Koka, Alqi Blako and several former mayors. But in Croatia, the former prime minister, Ivo Sanader, was sentenced to prison, while ministers, former ministers, deputies and hundreds of high-ranking officials were arrested. A few days after Secretary Blinken's visit, the US embassy brought to Tirana the prosecutors who put Ivo Sander in prison.
" Our embassy teams recently brought together Albania's SPAK and Croatia's USKOK to strengthen regional cooperation in the fight against organized crime and corruption. Regional cooperation is essential to respond to criminals who know no borders. The United States strongly supports specialized justice structures such as SPAK and USKOK as they investigate and prosecute the most serious crimes in the region ," the embassy announced.
But why did the SPAK's sister prosecutors come to Croatia? The biggest focus has been on money laundering. The Croats followed the money to go to the rulers and it seems that the same model is being tried to be introduced in Albania. The investigations against Sanader started with just a wristwatch.
" The importance of this visit was in the discussions about strengthening cooperation and facilitating the exchange of best experiences, successes and challenges faced by both institutions in efforts to fight corruption and international organized crime.
The main focus was also the exchange of information, especially in dealing with money laundering cases in Croatia, especially real estate transactions, involving shell companies and funds coming from or passing through Albania, as well as discussions related to current issues for which SPAK and USKOK will cooperate in the future ", announced SPAK.
The typical case where SPAK is following the example of Ivo Sanader is that of Ilir Meta. The former President is accused of having benefited by favoring CEZ-DIA. Whereas, Ivo Sanader was convicted because he had benefited €10,000,000 from the Hungarian company "MOL", to favor it in the Croatian market.
Regarding the investigations, journalists reported that Sanader wore very expensive wristwatches, one of which was worth over 100,000 Euros. The investigation started after the first indications and it was very difficult to gather evidence. The investigation was carried out by a team, which consisted of 7 Prosecutors and who worked 16 hours a day, including Saturdays and Sundays. Important facts were obtained, leading to the conclusion that the former Prime Minister was involved in criminal corrupt activities. Various witnesses have been contacted where they have given very important facts especially for the beginning of the process.
During the investigation, more than 500 people were interrogated, some of them more than once repeatedly. One of them, an accomplice with the former Prime Minister, is Mladen Barisic and was questioned 19 times, as the prosecutors did not believe in his statements. Prosecutors have asked the court to install camera monitoring and audio recordings. Also, a detailed financial investigation was conducted regarding Sanader's wealth. There has been cooperation with the anti-money laundering agency, the tax administration and special legal assistance from Austria and the US.
So, this is the example that the Americans are looking for, and it was not in vain that the USKOK investigators brought them to Tirana. Let's see now what SPAK will do with Meta and all the other files it has in hand. / Pamphlet
