With 12 votes in favor, 3 against and 1 abstention, the Law Commission approved this Monday the return of online gambling. The approval in the commission was made only with the votes of the majority, after the opposition voted against.
In 2018, the exercise of the activity of the "sports betting" category, which was played through a physical presence spread over the territory, was banned. There were 3 companies licensed for 10 years and there were 4200 secondary points distributed in the territory with more than 6700 employees. Income from gambling tax was 1.7 billion ALL, while total income from gambling was 2.3 billion ALL.
Although the activity of sports betting was prohibited by law, this activity was channeled to be practiced informally. On the part of the Gambling Supervision Authority, checks were carried out throughout the territory of the country. For the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, a total of 1,421 controls were carried out, resulting in confiscations, criminal proceedings and administrative measures with fines for 135 entities and individuals operating illegally in the gambling market.
Also, AMLF has reported 4035 illegal betting addresses to AKEP with the aim of closing these addresses.
