If we analyze the time periods, Berisha's battle for dignity lasted for about two years, until the moment of officially receiving the seal and logo. He lasted the role of the first missionary for less than 1 year, while we have to wait and see how long his role as a missionary of free voting will last...
In September 2021, Sali Berisha, at that time only with the office of MP and former Prime Minister, began what he would describe as a battle for dignity. It all had to do with the "non grata" sanction that was given to him by the US 3 weeks after the parliamentary elections, as well as a decision by Lulzim Basha to remove him from the Parliamentary Group.
September 16, a date that during communism commemorated the Peza Conference, also marked the day when Berisha would begin the battle to take control of the DP, which had Lulzim Basha as its chairman at that time, whom the former prime minister himself "blessed" to remain in office even after losing the parliamentary elections.
For almost 5 months, Berisha held what he called “Foltore” meetings, which were nothing more or less than city-by-city meetings with his supporters, where the main topic was the violation of his dignity, first by the then US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, and then by Lulzim Basha. And the main topic at that time was the lobbying of George Soros.
On December 11, 2021, he held what he called the DP Re-establishment Assembly and a week later called for a referendum among the party membership to recognize him as the legitimate leader. Lulzim Basha increasingly began to be called the former leader and one by one those who were considered his supporters in the forums either formed a third group, which then joined Berisha, or "betrayed" him a few weeks after the events of January 8, 2022, when the battle for the headquarters took place, between a group that was trapped inside and Berisha's supporters who were trying to break through the armored doors.
Berisha showed with the 2023 elections that he had full control over the DP electorate, even though he did not yet have the party's logo and seal, but the electoral result for local government was catastrophic. He managed to take 5 peripheral municipalities, the most important of which is Kavaja, but it seems that this result was enough for him to later take the party seal from Lulzim Basha and his group.
Although the battle for dignity began with the "non grata" that still has an American sanction today, after receiving the stamp of the DP, there was no more talk about the trampled dignity, being content with the fact that Lulzim Basha had expelled him as a "traitor and disloyal", while those who once stood by him had now joined Berisha as "wise men" who saw the true leader who would lead them to victory.
Berisha continues to be sanctioned by the US, despite the high expectations he created after Donald Trump entered the White House and the appointment of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Even lobbying in the US has so far yielded no results in this regard. However, the battle for the trampled dignity seems to be over.
Berisha has now taken on the role of missionary. He initially called himself a missionary who would lift Albanians out of poverty, because he had no personal interest other than that of returning to government for the third time to achieve greater achievements. This mission failed on May 11 and immediately after the elections he called himself a missionary for free voting.
In almost every statement since May 11, he has expressed that he is like a missionary who will wage the battle to restore what he considers the free vote, ignoring the election results and continuing a series of denunciations that, according to him, prove manipulation.
If we analyze the time periods, Berisha's battle for dignity lasted for about two years, until the moment of officially receiving the seal and logo. He lasted the role of the first missionary for less than 1 year, while we have to wait and see how long his role as a missionary of free voting will last.
He can most likely maintain this role until the next local elections, that is, in 2027, and until then we will probably see other cases of political bargaining, or not, between him and Edi Rama.
In these 4 years, we have seen several of these, including changes to the Electoral Code or criminal amnesty, not to mention allusions or accusations of bargaining in the allocation of territories for construction permits.
What is not known today is when he will decide to end the missionary role-playing game, with which he is already aiming to prolong as long as possible, keeping half of politics under control, regardless of the percentages in the Assembly hall. / Pamphlet /
