Rama begins his visit to the Vatican with a historic stop... open to all
As the country faces daily political, economic and social crises, Prime Minister Edi Rama has chosen to share with the public a moment that, according to him, will go down in history: the departure of the visit to the Vatican from Genazzano, at the basilica where the image of Our Lady of Good Counsel, known as Regina di Albania, is located. A symbolic stop, presented as a major state event, although the door of this church has been open for centuries to anyone who has wanted to visit.
In a long post on Facebook, Rama describes the visit as unprecedented for an Albanian prime minister, emphasizing that since 1467, no Albanian head of state or government had crossed the threshold of this basilica. A historical fact that the prime minister presents as a kind of debt personally repaid, amidst religious, national and symbolic references.
According to Rama, in this basilica, where the national flag stands next to Our Lady of Albania, almost all the Popes of Rome have performed rites, while he also mentions Pope Leo XVI, who, according to him, visited Genazzano immediately after his election.
But this narrative elevated to levels of "historical glory" has not gone without being accompanied by irony and criticism. Former minister Arben Malaj has reacted harshly, describing this self-mythification as excessive and disconnected from reality.
" Not to this point. Even Enver would be jealous ," writes Malaj, ironically making fun of the fact that a common visit, accessible to any Albanian tourist or immigrant in Italy, is sold as an epochal achievement. According to him, after 26 years at the top of politics, Rama has closed the circle of self-aggrandizement, where "even entering a church where the door has always been open is called a triumph."

After two and a half decades at the top of politics, we are sold as a historical achievement the visit to the bas-relief of the Queen of the Albanians, a monument that the Vatican has never banned visits to. It is surprising how a completely normal visit, accessible to any tourist or immigrant, suddenly turns into 'amazing glory'. It seems that after 26 years, the circle of self-mythologizing has been completely closed: now even entering a church where the door has always been open to see what has been there for centuries is called a triumph ," he writes.
Malaj's reaction reinforces the perception that the visit to Genazzano is serving more as material for personal narrative and political symbolism, than as a real development with state weight. As Rama continues his agenda in the Vatican and the meeting with the Holy Father, the public debate seems to remain not on the content of the visit, but on the way it is turning into a communication spectacle. /Pamphlet
