President Begaj with medical students: You have a sacred mission, Albania needs

At a solemn graduation ceremony for students of the University of Medicine, the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, expressed emotion and powerful messages addressed to the recent graduates, their professors and their families.

President Begaj's speech

It is a pleasure to be with you today on this significant day for the university, for your families and above all for you, the newly graduated students.
I thank you very much for the invitation and for your hospitality!

As someone who has studied Medicine, I cannot hide the emotions that this atmosphere conveys to me. You are today at a similar starting point, with the passion and dreams that will accompany you throughout your life, but above all with the great sense of mission that inspires the path you have chosen.
I feel honored to come to greet friends and colleagues of commitment.
The journey that unites us all here today is a long one. Medical studies, as well as the entire path that follows, have complexity and difficulties, but, at every moment of our education and work, the service provided to society and humanity is much greater.

Dear young colleagues,
You are graduating today from a university with a long tradition and dedicated to the quality of teaching and scientific research, despite all the difficulties that our country has gone through and the resources that this university requires.
You are graduating from a teaching staff that has prepared generations of medical professionals, who have been able to maintain the quality of health care in our country despite a health system that requires hospital reform and that needs more support.

You graduate from a university and from professors who have known how to preserve the dignity of the Albanian doctor, who enjoys a special respect in all Albanian families for his sacrifice and modesty, regardless of systems, regardless of politics, regardless of the emotions surrounding their work, and sometimes even accusations.
You graduate from a university that is also known outside our country, thanks to your colleagues, our colleagues who have left their mark with their work in Albania or in other countries.

Therefore, along with your diploma, you have the honor, dedication, and commitment of an Albanian doctor respected at home and sought after all over the world. You will need to protect and advance these achievements, which are both personal and professional, as well as those of all medical professionals.

Dear recent graduates,
Today you enter a special profession, perhaps the most special of all, because medicine is not just a profession, but a sacred mission for the entire society, a daily battle to prevent and treat morbidity and save lives. Being a doctor means facing suffering every day, but also with hope, seeking new knowledge, but also cultivating compassion to practice a strong science, but also a profound human art. This profession is a way of life that requires integrity, dedication and a high human spirit in the service of the patient.

As you have already learned, the path you have chosen is not easy. There will be great challenges, long days, moments when you will feel tired, but nothing is more rewarding than knowing that you have helped someone live and heal. This is the price of the nobility of the profession. Remember that medicine is a science in constant development. Today, in the era of digitalization and artificial intelligence, the pace of change is extraordinary. For this reason, the doctor must always remain a student. Only a thirst for knowledge will keep you worthy of your mission.

Dear recent graduates,

You are the future of healthcare in Albania, because the health of our citizens will rest on your shoulders. Today, you have a wide horizon of opportunities ahead of you, with open paths both within the country and abroad. But I invite you with all my heart: choose Albania! Our country needs you. Accept this as a mission and a challenge, and build your professional life here, next to your people. Help us strengthen together an even better, even more modern healthcare system, guaranteeing a healthier future for our citizens.

Dear teachers,

I want to express my gratitude for your hard work! You are not only training professionals, but also citizens with values, ethics and a sense of responsibility. It is precisely your dedication that determines the quality of our medical professionals and the trust that society places in them.

Facing the challenge of renewing medical staff to be professionally and morally competent is a task that requires patience and vision.

Thank you for sticking to this mission with passion and dedication!

Meanwhile, to all medical professionals, I want to say that you are the main pillar of the health system, who with dedication and sacrifice keep citizens' trust in medicine alive. We can build new hospitals and buy modern equipment, but without good doctors, without your knowledge and dedication, the health system has no life. Therefore, the greatest investment we can make is in you, in training, in scientific research and in the continued support of your noble profession.

We have an obligation to you to meet European standards of the health system. We have an obligation to create the conditions for you to stay in Albania, to be treated with dignity, while also giving you the opportunity to have experiences abroad.

Newly graduated,

This day is a starting point, not an ending. Getting into medical school is one of the greatest accomplishments in life, but there is an even greater achievement: upholding the Hippocratic Oath in every second of your work, regardless of the situation, conditions, and pressure.

Being a doctor is not just a profession. Being a doctor is a mission.

I wish you all the best in your mission!

May you be fulfilled, joyful and always respected!

Thank you!
