Prime Minister Edi Rama has commented with reservations from Brussels on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's proposal for an associate status for Ukraine in the European Union, emphasizing that candidate countries should not be treated separately from each other.
Rama appreciated the German Chancellor's special attention to enlargement, but said that this discussion should be seen in a broader perspective.
"We need to look at it broadly, without the need to provoke anyone. The candidates should not be divided. What about Moldova? Moldova has survived two Russian aggressions," Rama said.
According to him, a united Europe is better for everyone, while adding that keeping candidate countries out is more costly for the European Union itself.
"First of all, it is very interesting and welcome the special attention that the German Chancellor pays to enlargement, we appreciate this. It has been a topic that is no longer taboo, I am pleased with this, because for several years I have thought that a creative way must be found, because we are in a completely new world. Europe has a war that must be fought on its own soil. A united Europe is better for everyone. Not even the Albanian government, but the EP itself has issued a report that keeping us out is more costly. The letter was addressed to the leaders of the member states, it is a discussion that they should have. We expect to hold the Europe-Western Balkans summit.
