President Bajram Begaj has commented on the rejection of the invitation of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, for an informal dinner of the Balkan leaders in Athens. Albania was invited to the presidential level after the clash over the Fredi Beleri case.
Invited to 'Real Story', Begaj repeated the reasoning he gave at the time for refusing the invitation, saying that he did not participate because of the predetermined agenda.
Excerpt from the interview:
You very elegantly declined Mitsotakis' invitation to attend an informal dinner in Greece, and it seemed to be the first sign in many years of the state's seriousness, despite internal discussions, when it comes to external image he has a face, has a voice and I believe that was a good thing. But on the other hand, the problem remains and the recent discussion on the Beleri issue with Greece may again be the focus of your meetings if you have representatives of the state.
The foreign policy of the Republic of Albania is a commendable policy by the international committee, by the EU and by our strategic partner the USA, it is aligned with the countries of the EU and the USA and this foreign policy is not done overnight. Of course, when an invitation comes from counterparts or heads of state, it is appreciated and I don't know that I have refused any kind of invitation. Yes, the invitation has been evaluated and a response has been returned with a request for understanding for not participating in this informal dinner due to the fact of a previously predetermined agenda.
So you are saying that if you were invited by the President of the Greek Republic, you would have gone?
Each invitation is evaluated based on opportunity, based on agendas. Of course, the invitations are agreed in advance by the respective cabinets.
