Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Albana Koçiu, presented the Digital Identity project this Monday.
Prime Minister Edi Rama says Albania will become one of the first countries in the region to implement digital identity, an ambitious project that is expected to come into operation in early 2026, a year ahead of the deadline set by the European Union.
During the official presentation of the project, Rama described digital identity as the foundation of the country's technological future.
"Digital identity is the basis for the technological future that awaits us," said the head of government.
According to him, this step is an important part of the strategy for modernizing the administration and increasing economic transparency.
"What is being presented today will be available to our economy at the beginning of next year," said Rama, underlining the key role that this technology will play in the daily lives of citizens and businesses.
Rama also recalled that the European Union has set 2027 as the deadline for the mandatory inclusion of digital identity for its citizens.
"The EU has announced that by 2027, citizens of European Union countries must have a digital identity. We will have a digital identity in 2026, one year earlier than the EU."
