The former Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, says that Europe needs a peace pact, but the internal divisions that it has are the obstacle to achieving it.
In an interview for Avvenire , Prodi says that peace is made by the big ones and at this point, the role of the US and China is irreplaceable.
"I may sound monotonous, but I do not want to change one syllable of what I have said from the beginning: there would be no possibility without an agreement between the United States and China, and so it is today. We must admit that the king is naked and take into account the American and Chinese supremacy in the world: peace is made by those who are in charge", he says.
Prodi says that everyone is interested in peace and it should never be seen as surrender or a pact with the devil.
Peace always has its value in history. One of the mistakes made so far has been associating this word with some kind of pact with the devil. There has even been an attempt to call those who talk about peace naive. Our aim should be to reflect on what are the conditions for a possible, just and lasting peace.
The former head of the European Commission says that the old continent must give a definitive structure to its borders. Prodi emphasizes the Balkan countries as part of Europe and the need for an institutional reform of the Union.
"Since 2002, I have insisted on what I defined as a "ring of friendly countries" to be created with all neighboring countries, which can negotiate bilateral agreements with the Union, different from each other, to increase their individual role in a neighborhood policy that guarantees stability. Europe must be different from other world powers precisely because of the diversity of history through which we have been formed, having already gone through two very tragic wars. This is why I don't understand why France in the recent past has blocked the negotiations for the membership of Albania and North Macedonia in the European Union", says Prodi.
Prodi stops at France, as a "node" that hinders the evolution of the European process. He envisages a Europe run only by Germany.
"E gjithë kjo mund të bëhej brenda një dite nëse vetëm Franca do t’i vinte Evropës në dispozicion armën bërthamore dhe të drejtën e vetos në Këshillin e Sigurimit të OKB-së. Përkundrazi, nuk e bën këtë, duke mbetur vetëm përballë telasheve në rritje me vendet afrikane të ish-perandorisë. Evropa duhet të pajiset për një rol të ardhshëm. Riarmatimi historik, i rëndësishëm i Gjermanisë do të ndryshojë përgjithmonë natyrën e kontinentit tonë, i cili deri tani është drejtuar nga motori franko-gjerman me një rol jo aq margjinal – në fund të fundit – të Italisë. “Bon gré” ose “mal gré”, me këtë ritëm Evropa në të ardhmen do të ketë një udhëheqës të vetëm: Gjermaninë. Mbretëria e Bashkuar nuk mund të jetë, pasi ka dalë dhe tani është penduar për Brexit. Dhe Franca nuk mund të jetë më. Më vjen ndërmend ai përkufizimi i vjetër për ish-perandoritë si një shofer që drejton makinën duke parë vetëm në pasqyrën e pasme…", përfundon zyrtari.
