Veto for Beleri from Greece, Rama: Issue between two countries, has nothing to

One day after the Western Balkans - European Union summit, Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke at a press conference about Albania's journey towards the union.

Speaking about the position of official Athens that it will not support the integration of Albania until the issue of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, is resolved, the prime minister said that this obstacle is unreasonable and un-European.

" I also addressed the issue of the difficulty that the exports of bilateral disputes between countries at the EU table have created for years. There is a high awareness by the more experienced, longer-lived states in the united European family of how bilateral issues exported by a member state create reasonable obstacles. It is incomprehensible that in an integration process a country enters into negotiations, in a final phase of European state-making, benefiting from the transfer of knowledge from the EU, to be hindered, because there is a bilateral issue. This barrier is unreasonable and un-European in spirit. There have been many cases and stories, it is no coincidence that all these cases come from the Balkan area. Even more so when it comes to issues of a historical nature, to issues that do not affect any aspect that affects the principles of the EU ", said Rama.

Rama said that at the summit he underlined the fact that this is an issue that belongs to two countries and has nothing to do with the negotiation process.

" I underlined that this is an issue between us, we must deal with it, in all cases it is an issue that belongs to us, we do not see it connected neither to the negotiation process, nor to the content of our relationship with Greece, which is a neighboring country, with which we want to deepen our neighborly relations and deepen our friendship, doing everything in our power ", he added.

We want to be a European country in the Balkans, not a Balkan state in the EU, said the head of government.

" Albania must, can and will become the Europe of the Balkans. It has everything it needs. The internal transformation of Albania is very important for all of us ", he said.

The Prime Minister expressed his conviction that this stalemate will not hinder our country in its journey towards the European Union.

" I remain convinced that whether this impasse is overcome or not, Albania will not be delayed a single day, because we will continue and do our duties" , concluded Rama.
