
This Thursday's plenary session began with a minute of silence in honor of Judge Astrit Kalaja.
Kalaja was killed in the line of duty on Monday, October 6, inside the Court of Appeals. He was shot dead by 30-year-old Elvis Shkambi moments after the latter had handed down the court verdict against him.
Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and MPs expressed solidarity and pain for the loss of the judge, strongly condemning the violent act. He also said that Judge Astrit Kalaja served the justice system with integrity.
"After consulting with parliamentary groups, the murder on Monday of Judge Astrit Kalaja, who tragically lost his life at the Court of Appeal. The murder of a judge was condemned by everyone in our country. Judge Astrit Kalaja served the justice system with dedication and integrity. As a sign of respect, let us observe a minute of silence," said Peleshi.
