The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, announces that RKS license plates are circulating freely and openly in the territory of Serbia.
According to Kurti, in a post on Facebook, he writes that the report of the Kosovo police, which has monitored everything with great attention, has been informed that there is full implementation and that there were no incidents or obstacles.
"RKS license plates circulate freely and openly throughout the territory of Serbia.
At the last government meeting for 2023, held on December 27, I requested a report on the implementation of the decision by the Serbian authorities to allow the free movement of vehicles with RKS license plates on the territory of Serbia from January 1, 2024. From the report of our police, who have monitored everything with great attention, we have been informed that we have full implementation, and that there were no incidents or obstacles. Therefore, based on the principle of reciprocity as a premise for the regulation of relations between independent states, last night we made a decision to allow vehicles coming from the other side of the border with Serbian license plates. This decision of ours starts to be implemented when it is published in the Official Gazette.
In the event that the Kosovo Police meanwhile receives reports from the field about a change in approach or behavior by the Serbian authorities for allowing the free movement of vehicles with license plates of the Republic of Kosovo in the territory of Serbia, or obstructing the free movement in any form, we will be notified in time and act.
This new situation serves the free and easy movement between the two states. But this decision initially comes after two years of using the issue of license plates as a pretext by Serbia to tense the security situation in the north of our country; and, more recently, as an attempt to reduce criticism from the international community on Serbia after the irregularities and fraud in the December 17 elections there (especially in Belgrade).
The license plate issue in Kosovo in September 2021 was used to threaten Kosovo and the region through Russian Mig-29 planes raised in the sky around the border and attempting destabilization in the north of the country, especially through 16 barricades that were erected on four roads northern municipalities for three consecutive weeks in December 2022. And in December of the year we just left after 2023, this self-discipline of Serbia is used to reduce the pressure from the democratic west (the European Union, the United States of America and the United Kingdom) on Serbia for the manipulated and undemocratic elections, but also to cover up the official rejection of the Brussels Basic Agreement that was made by the letter of the Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabic to the EU Council on December 13, and to mask their responsibility regarding the terrorist and criminal attack in Banjska i Zveçan on September 24, 2023.
This is how this action of Serbia should be read: a maneuver of an undemocratic government for its own survival.
Throughout this time, our position regarding the issue of license plates has been based on the principle of reciprocity, the legal standards of the European Union that regulate the freedom of movement of citizens and vehicles. We will continue to be principled and constructive", said Kurti.
