In recent years, Kosovo has seen an increase in cases of domestic violence. According to Kosovo Police data, in 2024 there were 2,959 reported cases of domestic violence, while in 2023 there were 2,460 cases registered.
In the vast majority of them, the victims are women.
Since 2010, around 60 women have been murdered in Kosovo - two of them last year. In most cases, the perpetrators of these crimes were their husbands or ex-husbands.
In September 2020, Kosovo adopted the Istanbul Convention, drafted by the Council of Europe as an instrument that obliges states to combat violence against women and domestic violence.
However, organizations dealing with women's rights have often criticized justice institutions, saying that "light sentences" are "emboldening" the perpetrators of these crimes.
