The Ambassador of the United States of America in Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, has expressed the fear that Kosovo risks facing new tensions in the north due to the new regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, which has decided that the euro will be the only currency. official in the country.
In a statement to the media after the meeting he had with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Hovenier said that the US is concerned and has reservations about the implementation of the regulation.
He even said that the US is currently against the new regulation without full preparation. He said that this issue requires more care and dialogue. According to him, tensions are at risk, especially among people who depend on the aid that comes from Serbia.
"I don't know how to avoid at least the frustration of the citizens from the implementation of the decision. Let's take the example of a pensioner who receives financial assistance. He is used to this system. I guess he went to a certain point to get help. How will he get this benefit? What will happen to him? The elderly person may be shocked about this....I think there may be tensions from people who will feel left out of the help they depend on. No one wants such a thing" , he said.
Hovenier said that the US has hope that the Government of Kosovo can find a transitional solution.
