The vicious circle of political deadlock in Kosovo!

This is the moment to choose: Kosovo's interest over narrow political interest. If this vicious circle continues, the country risks not only stagnation but complete institutional, economic and social regression.

A political drama is unfolding in Kosovo that has transcended all institutional logic; 3 months after the February 9, 2025 elections, the Assembly has not managed to be constituted, although a full 20 sessions have been held. The reason? The Vetëvendosje Movement has not secured the votes to elect the Speaker of the Assembly, while the opposition is maintaining a blocking stance that is leading the country towards a spiral of crisis.

PDK, LDK and AAK refuse to support the candidate proposed by LVV, describing it as an "arrogant maneuver" by Albin Kurti. The latter, on the other hand, sees the nomination for speaker of parliament as the legitimate right of the winning party. The meeting of May 15 between President Osmani and political leaders did not bring a solution, on the contrary, it cemented the polarization.

The lack of consensus has paralyzed the Assembly and every legislative process. Kosovo today finds itself without a functioning government, with a power vacuum that threatens economic stability and progress towards the EU. The European Union and the World Bank have sounded the alarm; $800 million in development funds are at risk.

The situation has become even more sensitive due to the EU's punitive measures that have been in force since June 2023. Tensions in the north are worsening, while the current stalemate is strongly weakening Kosovo's position in the dialogue with Serbia.

The Kosovo Constitution provides for the dissolution of the Assembly if a speaker is not elected after three rounds of voting – which would mean new elections within 45 days. Another crisis on the horizon, which could also delay the election of the President after Vjosa Osmani's mandate ends in April 2026.

Instead of displaying political maturity, Kosovo's leaders have become mired in a meaningless battle of egos. The LVV must show flexibility and propose an acceptable candidate, while the opposition cannot continue to burn every opportunity for cooperation simply to weaken its opponent.

This is the moment to choose: the interest of Kosovo over narrow political interest. If this vicious circle continues, the country risks not only stagnation but complete institutional, economic and social regression./ Pamphlet
