Four people, including officials, have been arrested during a police operation in Pristina, on suspicion of bribery and abuse in issuing weapons permits, authorities announced.
The Basic Prosecution Office in Pristina said that among those arrested are two officials from the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs, who are suspected of having issued certificates for weapons possession while ignoring legal procedures.
The two officials are suspected of abuse of official position. While the other two arrested are suspected of accepting bribes in the private sector, the announcement says.
All four arrested people were taken into custody for 48 hours, after being questioned in the presence of their defense attorney.
Kosovo Police stressed that they "have received bribes from various persons who were provided with a weapon permit certificate without their presence, as provided by law and other subsequent procedures," Radio Free Europe reports.
Oath for Justice, a media outlet specializing in reporting on the justice sector, was the first to report on this case.
The Directorate for the Investigation of Economic Crimes and Corruption conducted raids at four different locations, including two private homes or apartments, a business premises and an office, Police said.
She said that during the raids, seven mobile phones, files and relevant documents related to the case were temporarily seized.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is the supervisory body for the process of issuing weapons permits in Kosovo.
The Kosovo Weapons Law stipulates who can be equipped with firearms and under what conditions. In addition to individuals, weapons permits are also available for private companies.
Laws in Kosovo also provide for imprisonment and fines for anyone who possesses a weapon without a permit.
