The sports world has been shocked by the tragic news of the passing of renowned figure skater Julia Marie Gaiser, who lost her life in a road accident while cycling on a bike path in Austria.
According to initial reports, the 23-year-old was hit by a truck at a busy intersection in Salzburg last week. Emergency crews attempted to revive the athlete at the scene, but she sadly died at the scene.
Local authorities confirmed that the truck driver tested negative for alcohol, while investigations into the exact causes of the accident are still ongoing.
Salzburg Mayor Andreas Jungmann expressed his deepest condolences to the family and the sports community: "I express my most sincere condolences to the Gaiser family. This is a great loss, especially for the world of sports."
Meanwhile, fans and athletes from around the world have flooded social media with messages of condolence. One user wrote: "Condolences to all her loved ones. A great loss."
Gaiser previously represented the Italian national figure skating team before moving to the Austrian team. She was one of the most prominent stars of Eis Team Salzburg, winning the Salzburg state title three years in a row – 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Anneliese Schenk, a representative from the Italian Ice Sports Federation, praised her dedication: “She started skating at the age of eight – later than most who start at four or five. However, Marie achieved impressive results thanks to her daily dedication. Skating was her whole world.”
The loss of Julia Marie Gaiser represents a heavy blow to figure skating and the sports community as a whole. Her memory will live on through the passion she brought to the ice rink.
