Newcastle have taken a confident step towards qualifying for the Champions League round of 16, after defeating Qarabag 6-1 in Baku in the first leg of the play-off phase.
The English team decided the fate of the match in the first 45 minutes, developing a dominant and effective first half in the final. The absolute protagonist was Anthony Gordon, who scored four goals in the 2nd, 32nd, 34th and 45+1 minutes. Two of the goals came from the penalty spot. With this performance, Newcastle went into the break with a deep 0-5 advantage.
In the second half, the home team reacted and managed to score the consolation goal in the 55th minute through Elvin Jafargulijev, temporarily narrowing the gap. However, the English advantage was not in question.
In the 71st minute, Jacob Murphy, activated as a substitute, sealed the final score 1-6 with a beautiful shot from distance, confirming his team's successful evening.
With this deep away win, Newcastle sees itself very close to qualifying for the next round, while the return match is expected to be a formality for the English team.
