Kevin Zefi has decided to end his adventure in Italy. After years spent at the Inter and Roma academies, the youngster who played with the Irish youth teams but decided to join the red and black hopes this year, has revealed that he found it impossible to continue living in Italy, after facing hardship and racism there. Speaking to the "Irish Independent", as he seeks to finally close the Italian chapter, Zefi has revealed his ordeal and the fact that the Italian experience has not helped him take steps forward in his career.
" Of course, I arrived as an Irish, half-Albanian boy and the racism started to be felt. What you have to do is be mentally strong. There were some episodes. When you play well, you don't pay attention, but when you're not doing so well, it hurts. There were opposing players, as well as some teammates, who talked behind my back and thought I didn't understand what they were saying. 'You Irish, you Albanian,' things like that.
It was very difficult, that after four months I wanted to leave Inter, to leave Italy. I had neither my family nor my friends. Going to Inter as a youngster means facing a very, very difficult place from a footballing point of view. I had a lot of ups and downs, but I had to face it. They made me play in different roles, with a very different way of training than what I was used to. It was very aggressive, very old style. The way they taught me things was too much for me.
"I think it's time to leave Italy. It didn't work for me. I have the fire inside me that makes me want to show Inter and Roma that they were wrong ," were the words of the Albanian footballer.
