The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has delivered $340,000 worth of equipment to the General Directorate of Prisons, which will help increase security in penal institutions for prisoners, visitors, and prison officers. The donated equipment will also improve intelligence and information sharing capabilities to combat terrorism and radicalization.
Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Kathryn Hammond and Assistant Director Stephen Fields of the U.S. Department of Justice’s International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP) presented the donated computer equipment, security items, and analytical software to Director General Klevis Qose. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureaus of Counterterrorism and International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs funded the donation.
Since 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice’s ICITAP has supported the DPBS by providing equipment, training, advice, and guidance to enhance its analytical and correctional intelligence capabilities. This has led to the creation of the Correctional Intelligence Unit, which improves the DPBS’s ability to combat criminal activity and terrorist threats, facilitates information sharing with Albania’s criminal justice system, and supports rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
