As Wagner's group began to rebel and march against Moscow, newspapers and TV began to give different versions, while in Italy there were also protesters who took to the streets.
I have heard some protesters, who in front of the cameras declare, for example, that the head of Wagner, Prigozhin, "was sold to the CIA" and therefore his rebellion is America's trick. I have heard that NATO is described as a "criminal organization". I think many of you have followed those chronicles and noticed those comments.
The idea that Wagner has passed into the service of America, for a reasonable fee, is a conspiracy theory that has no basis at all. Wagner's story is that of a group of mercenaries, but closely linked to Vladimir Putin. And they are often used by him, when he did not want to directly expose his armed forces. Wagner played a role in Syria, where Putin began to rebuild Moscow's influence in the Middle East, supporting the Assad regime and challenging Barack Obama over the use of chemical weapons against the civilian population. Wagner was decisive in the first aggression against Ukraine, the one in 2014 that resulted in the annexation of Crimea. Wagner has been deployed to various African countries, sometimes replacing them with French military contingents, as happened recently in Burkina Faso and Mali.
Even in the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022, Prigozhin's mercenaries have long been showered with praise from Putin for their successes on the ground against Kiev's forces. The Tsar's admiration for the mercenaries continued until Putin stopped tolerating Prigozhin's increasingly frequent and frenzied attacks on the upper echelons of the Russian regular armed forces.
In other parts of the world, Wagner continues and will continue to act as a long arm for Russian imperialism; in Ukraine there has been a fracture related to the progress of the conflict, strategic and tactical differences, conflicts of interest, corruption, incompetence and so on.
How can a conspiracy theory be drawn from this picture that Prigozhin suddenly became an American agent? Everything is possible for the human mind, who can prove to us that Prigozhin is not an extraterrestrial? Or is Putin ultimately the one who sold himself out to the CIA, which is allegedly using him to destroy what is left of the Russian sphere of influence?
Let's review the chain of strategic mistakes that Putin has made since February 24, 2022, when he squandered a high prestige to attack Ukraine and "blew up" the reputation of his military.
In light of this disaster, it would be a little less strange to imagine Putin serving American interests, rather than Prigozhin, who behaved with greater military effectiveness. But the same people who today, parading in Italian squares, see America as the occult and all-powerful director behind recent events, at the beginning of the war listened with fascination to Putin's analysis on the shows: those who describe the Tsar as a genius of geopolitics and strategy, against which it was absurd and dangerous to resist. They themselves had rejoiced at the disastrous US withdrawal from Kabul in the summer of 2021 and described it as proof that the US empire is over.
Anti-Americanism has all the hallmarks of a religious belief, it's a deep, visceral feeling: it doesn't need to show coherence or respect for facts. Conspiracy theories are a modern form of "magical thinking". In ancient times every phenomenon had a divine explanation, today we are surrounded by people who define themselves as secular, maybe claim atheism and say they have great respect for science, but in reality they have built their own "magical thinking" that they obey blindly.
