Buckingham Palace moves to remove Andrew as heir apparent

According to royal sources, Buckingham is said to be giving the "green light" to promote a parliamentary initiative that could lead to the removal of Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession to the British throne.

According to the same information, King Charles III has no intention of banning such a regulation, provided that it is promoted after the completion of the ongoing police investigation.

Mountbatten-Windsor remains eighth in the line of succession, despite losing his royal titles and stepping down from all public roles.

Palace sources clarify that the monarch will not oppose a legislative solution that would definitively exclude him from the prospect of ascending to the throne.

The impeachment process requires new legislation, which must be passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords, receive royal assent and the support of the 14 Commonwealth countries where the British monarch is head of state.

The 66-year-old's arrest followed the release of documents by the US Department of Justice that allegedly show he passed confidential government information to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and other contacts during his tenure as the UK's trade envoy.

He was arrested on his birthday and questioned by Thames Valley Police, remaining in custody for 11 hours. He was then released on bail, unconditionally, while investigations continue.

Police said searches will continue over the weekend at both the Royal Lodge in Windsor and the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where she currently resides. Items seized from both residences are now being examined by the relevant authorities.

So far, no application for an early opinion has been lodged with the Crown Prosecution Service, meaning any potential charges will be delayed.

Mountbatten-Windsor had resigned from his public duties in 2019, following his interview with the BBC and the Newsnight show, where he expressed no regrets about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

In 2022, he paid an out-of-court settlement of around £12m to Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was a victim of Epstein and led him to him. He has denied the allegations and the payment was made without admitting guilt.

Defence Secretary Luke Pollard told BBC Radio that the government was working with the Palace to push forward plans to definitively rule out the possibility of Mountbatten-Windsor ever taking the throne.

James Murray, the principal secretary to the Treasury, said the government was considering all possible further steps, without ruling out any possibility, but noted that a police investigation was underway.
