Rome did not authorize US planes bound for the Middle East to use a base in Sicily
Italy refused to give permission to US military planes, bound for the Middle East, to land at a base in Sicily.
Italy has refused permission for US military aircraft heading to the Middle East to land at a base in Sicily, the Corriere della Sera reported today. The move risks stoking tensions with Washington, which has criticized European allies for not supporting its war with Iran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that the United States may need to reconsider its relationship with NATO after the war ends.
The US flight plan was submitted without permission or consultation with national authorities and was forwarded after the US planes had already taken off, the newspaper reported, without specifying how it obtained the information.
Italian military inspections found that the flights were not regular or for supply purposes, and therefore not covered by existing bilateral agreements. As a result, they required parliamentary approval and oversight, according to Corriere.
Italy's action was reported at a time when other countries, such as Spain, have also closed airspace to American flights related to the US military operation in Iran, expanding efforts to distance themselves from the conflict.
