Greece buys ships from Italy, Turkey seeks defense systems

The formal approval of the purchase of two Italian Bergamini-type frigates for the Hellenic Navy is expected to be only a matter of time, as Athens continues to implement its 12-year armaments program at a time when the debate over defense autonomy in the European Union is gaining momentum.

After a series of negotiations and in the face of strong regional competition, the Greek side has secured priority for these Italian-built ships, which are expected to be integrated into its fleet starting from the end of 2028.

However, the agreement between Greece and Italy has not been easy, as the good operational condition of the frigates has made them sought after by other countries, due to the high flexibility and strategic capacities they offer.

According to the current plan, unless Italy changes its strategic orientation, the delivery of the ships will be gradual: each frigate will be passed to Greece after Italian shipyards complete the construction of a new ship for their fleet.

This approach allows Italy to support its domestic industry and renew its naval fleet, while simultaneously increasing its operational presence in the southeastern Mediterranean.

Meanwhile, demand for Italian defense industry products is growing, including from Turkey. According to reports, Ankara is considering cooperation with Italy to improve air defense, at a time when it has identified gaps in its capabilities following recent regional developments.

According to Bloomberg, Turkey intends to acquire the SAMP/T air defense system, developed by the Franco-Italian consortium Eurosam, which could fill the gap in advanced systems following restrictions related to the use of the S-400.

This system is expected to be part of a broader multi-layered air defense structure, which Turkey aims to develop according to the model of similar systems in the region.

However, Ankara's previous efforts to secure this system have been met with reservations from France. In this context, Turkey is considering deeper cooperation options with Italy, including joint production.

The developments come at a time when Ankara aims to strengthen its role in the European defense ecosystem, while in parallel investing in increasing domestic capabilities, including the production of missile and air defense systems. / Adapted from "Protothema"
