Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has revealed details of talks he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin to reach the deal that halted Saturday's uprising.
Lukashenko said he spoke to Putin by phone at 10 a.m. local time on Saturday morning about the growing crisis in southern Russia. He said that he negotiated with Prigozh all day on Saturday.
" The most dangerous thing, as I understand it, is not how the situation was, but how it could develop and its consequences. I also realized that a tough decision had been made to destroy Wagner. I suggested to Putin to take his time. Let's talk to Prigozhin, to his commanders ," said Lukashenko.
The Belarusian leader further said that Putin had told him that Prigozhin would not answer phone calls. But according to him, by the middle of the day, up to three channels were organized through which he could talk with Prigozhin in Rostov.
At 11 a.m. local time, Lukashenko said he called Prigozhin, who "picked up the phone immediately," saying the Wagner founder seemed euphoric.
" We spoke in the first round of 30 minutes in a swear language. Exclusively. There were 10 times more swear words than normal vocabulary. Of course, he apologized in advance and began to tell me everything using these shameful words, "said Lukashenko .
The Belarusian leader added that he warned Prigozhin that he would no longer mediate negotiations if any civilians were killed and that his forces would be destroyed if they continued their march towards the Russian capital.
" As soon as you intentionally, unintentionally kill at least one person, especially a civilian, that's it, there will be no negotiations with you and I will not talk to you. Halfway you will just be crushed like an insect," recalls Lukashenko he told Prigozhin during a phone call on Saturday, according to Belarusian state media.
"" We want justice! They want to drown us! We are going to Moscow! ", Lukashenko says he told Prigozhin.
" For a long time I tried to convince him. And in the end I told him: I know, you can do whatever you want. But don't be offended by me. Our brigade is ready for transfer to Moscow ," added Lukashenko.
The Belarusian leader described how Prigozhin backed down on his demand for the dismissal of Russia's defense minister and chief of the General Staff. Lukashenko said he gave Prigozhin personal guarantees for his safety and the safety of his men in order to put an end to the final rebellion on Saturday evening.
He further added that Prigozhin called him at 17:00 local time to accept the terms.
Prigozhin then asked him, " but ... what should I do? We stop, they will destroy us ," according to Lukashenko, who replied: " They won't. I guarantee you. I'll take it ... ".
