"It was only a few seconds. It almost didn't feel like a decision I was really making because there was only one option. We saw smoke and within minutes the place was engulfed in flames," survivor Annelise Cochran said.
In the confession given to AFP, the 30-year-old woman said that she lost her neighbors and friends from the devastating fires, while the car and the apartment were reduced to ashes.
As a good swimmer and a lot of knowledge about the sea, she didn't think much and after getting out of the car she jumped into the ocean where she swam for many hours, until she was found by the coast guard.
"I feel very blessed to have the connection to the ocean that I have because I think it helped me that night. The ocean literally saved my life. "The ocean water was heaven for me ," she added.
Six days after the tragedy, the survivor tells of the horror she experienced on the already destroyed island. Annelise Cochran stated that she will return to her parents' home as the trauma she has experienced is great, and that she will not live in a place that has left her with difficult memories.
The number of victims is increasing day by day, while 100 dead have been recorded so far, while more than 1000 others are missing.
