The United States has announced new sanctions against Iran's "shadow fleet," targeting illegal oil traders that Washington says fund the oppression of the Iranian people.
As announced on January 23, 2026 by the Deputy Press Secretary of the State Department, Thomas Pigott, the United States Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 8 entities and 9 vessels associated with the Iranian regime's so-called "shadow fleet".
These entities are suspected of transporting Iranian oil and petroleum products, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), worth hundreds of millions of dollars, circumventing international restrictions and financially bolstering the regime and its security forces.
Washington points out that, while large segments of the Iranian population are protesting against economic collapse and widespread mismanagement, the country's leadership continues to channel resources towards "foreign representations, missile programs and military activities, instead of meeting basic social needs."
High inflation, water and electricity shortages and deteriorating infrastructure are signs that the country's wealth is not returning to its citizens, according to the United States. "The Iranian regime refuses to put its people first," the official statement said.
The measure is part of the "maximum pressure" strategy, as outlined in National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM–2) and implemented under Executive Order 13902, which targets Iran's oil and petrochemical sectors.
