Five tons of drugs are seized in a submarine in Ecuador, the largest operation

Ecuador's navy has carried out the first major anti-drug operation under President Daniel Noboa. The Ecuadorian military announced that it has seized five tons of drugs from a half-submerged improvised marine vessel off the coast of the Galapagos Islands.

The naval operation took place in the area considered a national natural heritage, where the military located the semi-submarine with 5 tons of suspicious substances, the military statement said.

From its strategic location, Ecuador has turned into a logistical center for transporting cocaine to the USA, Europe and Central America, writes the AFP network.

The nation, located between Colombia and Peru, the world's two biggest cocaine producers, has seized 189 tons of the drug this year. The record was set in 2021, when a total of 210 tons were seized.

The Galapagos Islands are located 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador but are being used as a transit corridor for drugs and even recently weapons.

Last week the military said it had intercepted a ship with 122 rifles, 48 pistols and 124 rounds of ammunition about 150 miles off the island of San Cristóbal.

Authorities said that when the men on board spotted the Coast Guard in pursuit, they threw the nine crates of materials overboard, where the weapons were later found.

The new president of the country, Daniel Noboa, elected a few days ago, has as his main challenge the gangs connected to the Mexican and Colombian traffic cartels.
