Israeli army chief warns of 'collapse' in armed forces
Eyal Zamir

The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, has warned the government that the army risks “collapse” due to a growing shortage of personnel and ever-increasing operational demands, Israeli television Channel 13 reported.

During a security cabinet meeting, Zamir presented ministers with "ten alarm signals" on the state of the armed forces.

According to the report, he has stressed the urgent need for legal changes, including the adoption of a new law on recruitment, a law on reserve service, and the extension of compulsory military service.

"The IDF needs a law on recruitment, on reserves and on extending compulsory service. Soon, the forces will not be ready for routine missions and the reserve system will no longer cope," he was quoted as saying.

According to the Times of Israel, Zamir has issued similar warnings in recent months. In January, he sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that the lack of soldiers could immediately affect operational readiness.

Since the start of the war in Gaza, the Israeli army has consistently reported a shortage of around 12,000 soldiers, increasing pressure on existing structures and the reserve system.
