US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that opening the Strait of Hormuz to navigation is in the strategic interest of the G7 countries, calling on US allies to contribute more actively in this regard.
Speaking before departing for France, where he will attend a meeting of G7 foreign ministers, Rubio stressed that ensuring freedom of navigation in this key energy route is in the direct interest of member states. “ It’s in their interest, in their national interest ,” he said.
This is Rubio's first visit abroad since the start of US-Israeli military operations against Iran on February 28.
At the same time, he confirmed that there is "progress" in negotiations with Tehran, without giving concrete details. " Messages are being exchanged through intermediary countries and progress is being made ," he said, avoiding any prediction about the outcome.
Earlier, the G7 countries — Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Japan — have clearly expressed support for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which has far-reaching consequences for the global economy. For almost a month, Iran has severely restricted traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil trade.
US President Donald Trump stated at a cabinet meeting that Iran is more interested in negotiations than the US itself, while repeating criticism of NATO. Along the same lines, Rubio stressed that allies should "be grateful" to the US for launching the military operation in coordination with Israel.
Regarding Russia's role, Rubio said Moscow is focused primarily on the war in Ukraine and not on supporting Iran. However, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said there are indications that Russia is contributing to Tehran's military efforts, which are being used against American targets.
