The US president is confident that Tehran will surrender, although the difficulty of holding territory, such as Kharg Island, may be too great.
An official from one of the countries mediating between the US and Iran told the Times of Israel newspaper that Donald Trump appears to be leaning toward ordering a major US ground operation against Iran, as Washington is convinced that Tehran will succumb to such military pressure.
With full knowledge of the mediation efforts, the official said the US privately acknowledges that Iran is unlikely to agree to the concessions set out in Washington's 15-point plan and has sent thousands of troops to the region to occupy the Iranian island of Kharg on Trump's orders.
Another official, from a mediating country, warns that while the US may be able to take the island, holding it for an extended period of time will require many more troops and prolonged fighting, well beyond the four-to-six-week timeframe that Washington has publicly said the war will last.
This Saturday marks four weeks, but the US, led by Donald Trump, still claims to be well ahead of schedule.
Both officials from the intermediary countries say Iran is unlikely to capitulate, regardless of whether a ground operation goes ahead. They insist, in effect, that Iran will now agree to terms it was unwilling to accept before the US started the war.
Trump announced on Monday that he was extending until Friday a deadline for Iran to agree to his 15-point proposal to end the war or face a series of bombings of its power plants.
