How America and Trump are "invading" the Davos Economic Forum
Donald Trump

A message written in snow on a mountainside in Davos has appeared: "No Imperialism." A symbolic warning ahead of Donald Trump's arrival at the World Economic Forum for the first time in six years.

Ironically, this year there is little snow and temperatures are above freezing, in a year when global warming and renewable energy have taken a back seat. This year's forum is different from others, not only because of the climate, but also because of the major political and economic changes.

This is the first Davos without its founder, Klaus Schwab, 87, who stepped down after allegations of misconduct and personal spending with the organization's funds, allegations that were not fully confirmed by internal investigations. Today, the Forum is headed by Børge Brende, a former Norwegian foreign minister.

This year's key figure is Larry Fink, the head of BlackRock, the financial giant that manages about $14 trillion, almost as much as the GDP of the entire eurozone. It was Fink who played the main role in restoring Davos's importance and convincing Trump to attend.

Trump arrives with a powerful delegation: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, negotiator Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner. For the first time, the US has rented a deconsecrated church in Davos, turning it into “US House”, where a parallel program of conferences will take place, from space and Elon Musk, to cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.

On the official program, the topics of diversity and the “woke” agenda have faded significantly. It is no longer Davos where Greta Thunberg warned that “the world is burning.” Artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies and semiconductors are at the center. Wall Street executives, such as Jamie Dimon and Ken Griffin, take an equal, if not larger, stage than some heads of state.

However, Trump will not have an easy time dominating the agenda. Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Volodymyr Zelensky are also present in Davos, while Giorgia Meloni, although not on the program, continues to be considered a participant by the Forum.

A special moment was the applause for Denmark. In a private meeting, Delaware's Democratic governor, Chris Coons, with a Danish flag on his jacket, recalled the historic shared sacrifices between Europe and the United States, questioning the current clash over Greenland. His speech was met with unanimous applause.

Davos 2026 thus marks a strong turning point: less ideology, more economic power, and an American presence that aims to directly influence the global agenda.
