President Donald Trump announced today that he is nominating Mike Waltz to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, following the latter's dismissal from his role as national security adviser.
His place will likely be taken by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will now also serve as national security advisor.
“I am pleased to announce that I will nominate Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress, and as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role. In the meantime, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to make America and the World SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter! ,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier today, it was reported that Waltz was expected to leave the Trump administration in the coming days, according to sources, the first major staff shakeup since the president took office in January.
Waltz had been on shaky ground after inadvertently adding a journalist to a group chat on a messaging app regarding highly sensitive military strikes.
