Another poll "hits" the US president's positions: Most Americans

Only four in 10 Americans expressed positive views of Trump after his first 100 days in office

A majority of Americans say President Trump is a "dangerous dictator" who poses a threat to democracy and believe he has overstepped his authority with actions such as mass layoffs of federal employees, a new poll says.

The broad poll released Tuesday, on Trump's 100th day in office, is the latest sign of the loss of support for his immigration and economic policies - the two issues that largely drove his election.

Only four in 10 Americans expressed positive views of Trump after his first 100 days in office, according to the poll by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), a nonpartisan organization.

52% agreed with the provocative statement that Trump "is a dangerous dictator whose power must be limited before it destroys American democracy," the poll said.

This question offered a big warning sign for Trump: A majority of independents (56%) agreed that Trump is a “dangerous dictator,” suggesting that the middle-class voters who helped bring him back to office are abandoning him.

The poll is among those that have shown the greatest dissatisfaction with Trump's push for mass deportations, sweeping tariffs, more control over colleges and the firing or layoff of more than 100,000 federal employees.

These priorities have led the new administration to unilaterally end diversity and equity programs, cancel student visas, and continue to hold at least one wrongly deported man in a notorious El Salvador prison, despite a court order to return him to his country.

The poll found that 83% of Republicans - a relatively low number for Trump - had favorable views of him and his actions, while 35% of independents and 8% of Democrats did.

Many respondents expressed alarm at his moves to reshape the government, impose his own tariffs, and deport people without due process.

Majorities of black Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans agreed that Trump is a "dangerous dictator," compared with 45% of white Americans — a reflection of the racial divides that Trump and his actions create in such polls.

" Most Americans see Trump in dictatorial terms, and I think most Americans are concerned that American democracy is at risk. It's only been 100 days into the Trump administration, yet we've seen opposition among a majority of Americans to Trump's agenda," PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman told Axios.

The flip side: 81% of Republicans surveyed said they still believe Trump is a strong leader who should be given the power he needs to restore America's greatness. 51% of white Americans agreed.

Trump has attacked several media polls showing his approval ratings falling, posting on Social Truth on Monday that they were "fake" and saying the organizations behind them should be investigated for election fraud.

Americans remain evenly divided on Trump's broad immigration goals, Deckman said, but the poll shows that most people strongly disagree with unconstitutional or inhumane practices.

For example, a majority of Americans (61%) disagree that the federal government should place immigrants who are in the country illegally in internment camps guarded by the U.S. military until they can be deported.

Most Americans also agree that President Trump has exceeded his authority by ordering mass layoffs of federal employees across multiple agencies.

More than seven in 10 Americans oppose closing or drastically reducing all major federal agencies, especially if it means things like air travel, medicine and water could be less safe.
