
One of the biggest trials against drug trafficking has started in Belgium, thanks to the "SKY Ecc" application. There are 129 people who are facing criminal charges, who are from Albania, Belgium, Colombia and North Africa.
The multi-ethnic organization, active from 2017 to 2022, consisted of several criminal gangs and was dismantled after an operation by Belgian, German and Italian police.
Prosecutors say the cocaine and cannabis were transported in containers from South America and Morocco and entered through ports in Belgium, the Netherlands and France, before being distributed across Europe.
The case is based in part on evidence obtained after investigators in Belgium, France and the Netherlands broke down encrypted communications on the Sky ECC and Encrochat apps, commonly used by criminals.
The Belgian Minister of Justice, Paul Van Tigchelt, declared that it was one of the strongest strikes against organized crime in Belgium.
