Analyst Skënder Minxhozi has described December 21, 2023 as a historic date, the day when the Assembly voted with 75 votes in favor of removing the immunity of Sali Berisha, which paves the way for his arrest.
In an interview for ABC News, Minxhozi said that this marks a big turning point in Albanian politics, but also in society.
According to Minxhozi, former Prime Minister Berisha has reached the bottom and added that he made a fatal mistake by returning.
Minxhozi underlined that Berisha failed and did not realize anything he had promised after his return.
"The last sessions we are used to last a few minutes, there is no normal functioning. This does not remove anything from the historical aspect of today's vote, it marks a big turning point not only in Albanian politics, but it will have effects and seismic waves in Albanian society. We are in a situation where the new justice dares to hit the biggest political figure in the Albanian transition. A very complex figure who sees himself at the end of his career, isolated internationally, but also with problems with justice. A situation that would open a big game with the immunity of the political elite in Albania, if hit as Berisha was hit, henceforth they are without the historical immunity that justice had given them. Today, the entire Albanian political class sees itself exposed in the face of an investigation of any justice, it gives the opportunity to act even against those who have been untouchable.
The Democratic Party suffered a big split on January 8, it was a violent split, a macabre spectacle. At that time, two clear lines collided, Basha's and the other current which defended its cause with Lulzim Basha's failures. What Berisha promised was the reunification of the Democratic Party, that no one would be excluded, that he would revive the opposition spirit in the country, he failed in all these objectives. By removing the criminal file he has on himself, Berisha has failed politically after January 8. Berisha did not achieve more than Lulzim Basha. We see it in the fact that in the elections of May 14, he was able to deal with Ilir Meta, out of 61 municipalities, they were able to get only 7. Berisha has an extreme political problem, he made the fatal mistake of returning.
Today, the official Democratic Party did not appear at the session at all, the group standing in the middle with Bardhi and others identified with Berisha's personal fate. Today, the Democratic Party practically only follows the agenda of Sali Berisha. Berisha has been talking about a revolution, a revolt for months, he has changed the banners of the DP several times, these are calls that are not addressed to journalists, but to the large Albanian audience, he remembered that popular support would be returned to him. He remembered that his entire legal saga would produce an increase in the opposition spirit in Albania, which would ensure his immunity. The power of Sali Berisha, since the 1991s, has come from the populist spirit that he brought with him, he advertised himself as a politician and party leader of large rallies, it was true until recently, in 2019 when he handed over the mandates. Now it happened that in the last criminal saga of the doctor, we are seeing that the popular spirit is deflated.
The arrest of Berisha paves the way for Albanian politics to no longer enjoy the political immunity it had, it is a great development. It would make Albanian politicians more responsible. Berisha, with his return, blocked the political process in Albania. Berisha's removal from the scene will unblock the political process. Today is a historic date in Albania, which can bring the opening of the stage for new political figures", he emphasized.
