Democratic member of the Tirana Municipal Council, Ilir Alimehmeti, has clarified that the dismissal of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as requested by Prime Minister Rama at the SP Assembly last week, cannot be done by the Municipal Council.
Alimehmeti stated that the Municipal Council only proposes and dismissal is a decision made only by the Prime Minister.
He emphasized that if the Socialist municipal councilors of Tirana initiate Veliaj's dismissal, the Democrats will vote for it, but in any case, the decision to dismiss again belongs to Prime Minister Rama.
"These early elections for Tirana should have been held long ago. Veliaj has not been in office for 7 months. But why did Rama wait these 4 months? Rama gave permission for the municipal council to begin procedures. We did this procedure in mid-May. The municipal council only has legal authority to propose. The Prime Minister makes the dismissal. Even today, as we speak, Rama has not dismissed Erion Veliaj. Edi Rama has still violated the law to this day.
He has the right to dismiss him in a second for serious violations, otherwise the municipal council submits a proposal and he still dismisses him. Tirana continues in illegitimacy. The law prohibits the Prime Minister from issuing orders to the municipal council, it is a legislative power and the executive power is not allowed to give orders to the legislative power. We always vote in accordance with the law. We have requested this in writing for many months. The municipal council does not dismiss, it submits the proposal for dismissal to the Prime Minister. It only proposes. We will absolutely vote in favor. We have requested it since May", Alimehmeti emphasized in an interview for the Sot Live show.
