The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, commemorated today the 582nd anniversary of the Treaty of Lezha and the figure of its leader, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, emphasizing the historical importance of this moment for the Albanian nation.
In a message published on social networks, Begaj stated that the Lezha Covenant represents a turning point in national history, where "unity triumphed over division, responsibility over personal ambition, and common interest over individual interest."
"Today, 582 years later, it remains a standard of political and institutional behavior. A reminder that our strength as a nation has not rested solely on bravery, but on coordination, vision, and responsible leadership. In the spirit of the vision of Gjergj Kastrioti, Skanderbeg, Albanians acted as one body and became part of the European history of endurance, dignity, and freedom ," the President wrote.
The Treaty of Lezha was held on March 2, 1444, at the Cathedral of “Saint Columba” in Lezha. It marked the creation of a military alliance between the Arbër princes, with the aim of joining forces against the Ottoman Empire, which at the time threatened Albanian territories.
The Lezha Assembly was attended by principalities from the north to the south of the country, including the Arianitas, Dukagjinas, Balshaj and Topias, as well as representatives from Montenegro. The Assembly decided that the commander-in-chief of the League would be Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, recognizing his political and military authority.
After this unification, Skanderbeg led the resistance against the Ottoman occupation for about 25 years. The Treaty of Lezha is considered one of the fundamental moments of medieval Albanian history, which contributed to the strengthening of the Arbër state and the shaping of national identity.
