Rama's revenge in local government, Tabaku: Municipalities cannot be

Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has reacted strongly on social media following the wave of resignations of mayors of administrative units and deputy mayors, following ultimatums given by Prime Minister Edi Rama. She describes this action as an unprecedented intervention in local government, warning of serious consequences for the functioning of local democracy.

“Municipalities cannot be treated as subordinate offices of the Socialist Party or any ministry,” Tabaku said on Facebook. She strongly criticized the involvement of ministers in “interviewing” local staff, calling this process a flagrant violation of the principles of separation of powers. According to her, local representatives are elected by the citizens and cannot be replaced at the will of the central government.

Tabaku warns that this government's behavior risks seriously undermining the foundations of democracy in the country, turning local government into an extension of the executive branch, rather than an independent mechanism that serves citizens. Her reaction comes at a time when Rama has launched a "cleansing" of local structures, under the justification of increasing efficiency, but which the opposition sees as a maneuver for the total capture of territory.
